A Whole Nother World

In the movie "Binta and the Great Idea" it shows a very different society from our own. In this place called Senegal their educational system is different because they don't seperate the kids based on age. They keep everyone in one class regardless of how smart or how old they are. Another thing is that unlike here the kids there are not requried to go to school, it's up to the parents. One part of the movie focusses on a girl named Soda who wants to go to school but her father won't let her. He believes that she should be doing house work and not going to school. Her mother wants her to go to school and pleas with the father but to no avail.

The other focus of the movie was with Binta's father and his idea to adopt a western child or "Tubab". He believes that the western people are corrupted by technology and aren't truly happy. He believes that if he adopts a western child and raises him as his own the child can be happy in their society.

I was a little surprised with the ending because in the beginning Binta's father was going on and on about how great western technology was. I thought he would want to bring some of it into his society and it would make things better. As it turned out he was happy with his life and thought it was better without that techonlogy. He was proud of who he was and the place he lived.

I enjoyed the film because it showed how not everyone has the luxuries that we have in the U.S. We tend to take our technology and educational programs for granted and fail to realize what it may be like without it. The movie showed that you should be grateful for what you have and to respect and be proud of your heritage.

About Me

I am a hardworker, I always try to do my best at whatever I do. I don't like to give up or quit at something even if it seems hopeless. I try to talk to different people and to make new friends. I like to help others with different problems they face. I am strong-willed, and can sometimes have a big ego. I can be proud of things I do and sometimes get a little upset about negative remarks. I enjoy success like any other and always do my best to learn from failures in order to not repeat them.

I am here at Moraine in order to advance my education. In order to get far in life you need to have certain degrees and the more you have the better you will do. I hope to earn my bachelors degree and get a good job. With this degree it will allow me to earn a lot more money at my job to further advance my future.

I believe my experiences at school have made me more open to other people. It's also made me more responsible with my choices and actions. I believe it's had a strong impact on the person I am today.
